Funding Cutbacks Affect Us All

Amidst almost daily news of cutbacks in the public service and community service organizations, the BC Council for Families has announced that due to significant decline in the level of provincial funding we receive, our organization has been forced to reduce its workforce in order to cut costs.

"It’s been extremely sad for all of us to say goodbye to our friends and colleagues. We greatly regret the hardship these layoffs will cause for employees and their families, and we want to do everything we can to help them weather these changes," said BC Council for Families Executive Director Glenn Hope. “The difficult decision to eliminate the jobs of valued Council employees was made with the greatest reluctance. We have worked very hard to maintain as many of our services as possible in a very challenging economic climate, and we’ll continue to strive to sustain the high level of service BC’s community of family service professionals deserve."

“The unfortunate reality is that with no growth expected in social service budgets over the next few years, many of BC’s non-profit organizations may forced to make similar difficult choices – with catastrophic results in our communities – unless there are substantial changes in this province’s fiscal policies,” he added. “Going forward, the BC Council for Families will continue to be a strong voice for the value of prevention. And we will make every effort to ensure that we continue to provide family services professionals with the training and resources they now need more than ever as they work to support our families and our communities.”

Families across BC are struggling as communities are forced to cut programs, services, and jobs that formerly supported parents, children and youth. The BC Council for Families, as a member of the Roundtable of Provincial Social Services Organizations, encourages governments at all levels to recognize that investments in social infrastructure and community services are key to ensuring a strong future for all British Columbians.

Where is our opposition

Where is our opposition party...? The provincial liberals have been playing this game for nearly a decade and the only thing they have learned is that they can continue to do so and get re-elected by giving back less than 50% of what they took away - just before election time. It is not enough to say we are doing our best and are sorry for the layoffs and subsequent disasterous outcomes - we need our opposition party to step up to the plate now and quit cowering!
