  • Building a Youth Mental Health Framework for Canada

    Apr 26

One in 5 Canadian youth experience a mental health problem or mental disorder. Most major mental health disorders begin before a person turns 25. Yet Canada doesn't have a national plan for child and youth mental health. To address this, the Mental Health Commission of Canada's Child and Youth Advisory Committee is currently working on developing the Evergreen Framework -- part of the Commission's Canadian Mental Health Strategy initiative.

Co-parenting is on the rise in Canada.

While joint custody arrangements in which children spend equal time with each parent still occur in fewer than 10% of divorces, the numbers are steadily growing, according to Dr. Anne Marie Ambert of York University in Toronto. Dr Ambert, a recognized authority on divorce, remarriage and parent-child relationships, is the author of Divorce: Facts, Causes and Consequences, a recent study published by the Vanier Institute of the Family. Ambert points out that co-parenting arrangements confer benefits to both kids and parents as they weather the transitions of divorce and its aftermath.

How are mothers impacted when fathers are highly involved in the day-to-day care of children?
